What was the first piece of technology you remember using? What was your favorite (or least favorite) thing about it?
My family had a desktop Macintosh. It was a gray cube with a black screen, and my brother spent hours playing games on it. My favorite thing about it was watching him play “Prince of Persia.” My least favorite thing about it was that he would spend hours playing with the computer instead of with me.

What piece of obsolete technology do you still use? Why?
I still use an analogue, battery-powered alarm clock. It’s loud enough, small enough to carry around with me, and I don’t worry about its battery running out when I’m out in the woods for weeks with no cell service. Its hands are painted with radium, so they glow in the dark. I use it because I love it, and I trust it.

What is your favorite social network and why?
Facebook. Partly because I don’t know how to use the others, but mostly because I love gossip. I love knowing what’s going on in peoples’ lives, even if I haven’t talked to them in 10 years. Though I complain about it, I love seeing all the wedding and baby photos, all the location and relationship status changes. It fascinates me. And gives me perspective.
